5 Lies You’re Told About Building a Coaching Business

by

If you’ve been in the coaching world for any length of time, you’ve probably heard plenty of advice that sounds encouraging… but doesn’t actually help you build a profitable business.

After more than two decades in this industry, I’ve discovered that some of the most common coaching advice is also the most misleading.

Here are five lies that keep many coaches stuck.

Lie #1: “Just Follow Your Passion.”

Passion is what gets most of us into coaching. We genuinely want to help people.

But passion alone doesn’t build a business.

People don’t invest because you’re passionate about a topic. They invest because you solve a problem they desperately want solved.

The coaches who thrive don’t simply follow their passion. They package it into a clear transformation that people are willing to pay for.

Lie #2: “You Need a Huge Following.”

This myth causes countless coaches to postpone their dreams.

“I’ll launch my program once I have 10,000 followers.”

The truth is, you don’t need a massive audience—you need the right audience.

I’ve seen coaches with a few hundred email subscribers fill group programs while others with tens of thousands of followers struggle to get clients.

Relationships, referrals, partnerships, and a clear offer will almost always outperform chasing vanity metrics. In fact, some of the biggest breakthroughs in my own business came long before social media was even a thing.

I built much of my business through strategic partnerships, telesummits, and webinars. Those relationships generated millions of dollars in revenue over the years and taught me that trust will always outperform follower counts.

Lie #3: “You Need to Be Everywhere.”

Social media makes it seem like you need to be posting all day, every day.

Instagram. Facebook. LinkedIn. YouTube. TikTok. Podcasts. Networking. Blogging.

It’s exhausting.

The most successful coaches don’t try to master every marketing channel. They choose the strategies that fit their strengths, their audience, and the lifestyle they want to create.

More isn’t better. Focused is better.

Lie #4: “Build It and They Will Come.”

Many coaches spend months creating the perfect coaching program.

Then they wait.

And wait.

Unfortunately, great programs rarely sell themselves.

Building a coaching business requires more than expertise. It requires a system for attracting prospects, enrolling clients, delivering an exceptional experience, and building long-term relationships.

Without that system, even the best coaching program can remain hidden.

I’ve seen this happen over and over again. Coaches spend months perfecting their curriculum, designing beautiful workbooks, and recording videos… only to realize they never figured out how people were actually going to find them.

Ironically, the coaches who get clients fastest are often the ones who start talking to potential clients before their program is “finished.”

They build the program and the audience together.

Lie #5: “You Don’t Need to Be Techie.”

This one may have been true twenty years ago.

It isn’t true today.

Running an online coaching business means managing leads, enrolling clients, accepting payments, scheduling sessions, delivering programs, tracking client progress, sharing resources, communicating with members, collecting testimonials, and much more.

You don’t need to become a computer programmer.

But you do need technology that helps your business run smoothly.

The problem is that many coaches try to stitch together five, ten, or even fifteen different tools. They spend more time logging into software than serving their clients.

Technology shouldn’t create stress – it should eliminate it.

That’s exactly why I created Coaching Genie.

I wanted coaches to have one easy place to manage their coaching business – from enrolling new clients and delivering transformational programs to keeping clients engaged every step of the journey.

When your systems work together, your business becomes simpler to run, your clients have a better experience, and you’re free to focus on what you do best: coaching.

You don’t have to be a techie.

You just need technology that’s designed specifically for coaches.
