Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the questions I ask—not just with clients, but in my own life and business.
Sometimes, I wonder, “Am I asking the right ones?” The power of asking questions can truly shape the direction of your business, relationships, and mindset. And I’ve noticed that there are two types of questions that come up again and again: the big, visionary questions, and the tactical, get-it-done questions.
Striking a balance between these two? That’s where things get really interesting.
The Big “Why” Questions
As a coach, you probably spend a lot of time helping your clients discover their “why.” I know I do. But here’s the thing: I don’t always pause to ask myself those same high-level questions. Recently, I’ve been challenging myself to step back and reflect on the deeper reasons behind my own decisions. Not just, “How do I grow my business?” but strategic questions for growth, like:
- Why am I focusing on this specific coaching niche right now?
I’ve had moments where I was knee-deep in developing a new program, only to pause and realize, “Wait, is this aligned with my bigger vision?” This kind of high-level question forces me to check in with the bigger goals I have for my life—not just my business. - What would happen if I completely reimagined how I work with clients?
Recently, I toyed with the idea of switching up my 1:1 coaching model and offering small group coaching instead. I had to ask myself: What if I tried something new? What’s the potential upside or risk here? These kinds of big-picture questions don’t give easy answers, but they open doors to new possibilities. - How does this choice impact my long-term vision?
When I started thinking about scaling my business, I had to pause and ask, “How does this align with the lifestyle I want?” Because the last thing I want is to grow in a direction that leaves me burnt out. Have you ever found yourself working hard toward something, only to realize it’s not aligned with your true vision?
These high-level questions aren’t always comfortable, but they’re necessary. They remind me to stop looking at just the tasks in front of me and zoom out to see the bigger picture. When’s the last time you asked yourself one of these?
The “How-To” Grind
On the flip side, we all know the tactical questions are where the rubber meets the road. There’s a certain satisfaction in figuring out the mechanics—whether it’s setting up an email funnel or automating client onboarding. Sometimes, though, I get stuck in this mode. I’ve caught myself spending hours tweaking a webinar funnel or reworking my content calendar, and I’m like, “Okay, I’ve nailed the ‘how,’ but have I forgotten the ‘why’?”
Here are some examples of the tactical questions I’ve been wrestling with:
- How do I simplify my content creation process?
I love connecting with my audience, but let’s be real—creating consistent content can feel like a full-time job! I’ve been diving deep into systems that help me automate and streamline, like batch creating posts or repurposing old content. What about you—are there any processes you’re trying to streamline in your business right now? - How do I create more time for strategy while still delivering value to my clients?
I’ve realized that getting bogged down in the day-to-day operations leaves little room for the high-level thinking that actually grows my business. For me, it’s about figuring out how to delegate or automate more, so I can focus on big-picture strategy. - How do I grow my coaching practice without burning out?
This has been huge for me lately. It’s easy to get wrapped up in chasing growth, but at what cost? I’m constantly asking, “How can I scale my business and protect my energy?”
Tactical questions are key for day-to-day operations, but if we stay stuck here, we might lose sight of the bigger picture.
Finding the Sweet Spot
What I’ve learned is that both types of questions—big and tactical—are essential. The visionary questionstactical questions keep me moving forward. It’s about finding that balance between dreaming big and taking action.
So, here’s where I’m at: When I feel stuck or like I’m just spinning my wheels, I stop and ask myself, “Am I spending too much time asking tactical questions and not enough time thinking about the bigger picture?” Or maybe, “Am I dreaming so big that I’m not taking any action?”
What about you? What questions have been driving your decisions lately?
Because, as I’ve found, the right questions are like a treasure map—guiding us exactly where we need to go. What’s the next question you need to ask yourself?
